Perl scripters,

Did you ever want to just grab the current year in four digit format without pulling in the entire localtime array? Me too. Here is a simple statement that does just that and nothing more. It pulls in the sixth element of the array which is the year. Don't forget, the array begins with index value 0 so the sixth element has an index value of 5.

$currentyear = (localtime)[5] + 1900;

Nationwide All Media 3 Minute Long EAS Test

Please read the below message from FEMA.

On Wednesday, November 9, 2011, FEMA, DHS and FCC willconduct the first national test of the Nationwide Emergency Alert System (EAS). This nationwide test will kick off at 2:00 p.m. (EST) and run concurrently across all time zones.

This system test is the first of its kind designed to broadcast a nationwide message to the American public. In the history of the country, nothinglike it has been conducted on such a level. As you may be aware, there havebeen tests in the past, but not of this magnitude encompassing all regions of the Nation simultaneously. The three (3) minute test will run concurrently on all radio and TV band stations exceeding the previous messages broadcast which were anywhere from a 30 second to 1 minute message.

There is great concern in local police and emergency management circles about undue public anxiety over this test. The test message on TV mightnot indicate that it is just a test. Fear is that the lack of an explanation

Homemade Gray-Hoverman Antenna

I built an antenna over the holiday weekend. It receives just as well as the Radio Shack VHF/UHF that I bought twenty years ago for $30. I left that one in the attic at my last house when I moved.

I based it on the DBGH, double bay Gray Hoverman, designs that I found online at a Canadian forum. Below is a picture of of the one I built.

I used some old wood and wires and hardware that were lying around out in the garage so it did not cost me a dime of real money, just the time that I put into it. I figure I saved about $100 based on comparable antennas online.

I am picking up 28 channels just as I did at the other house with the RS antenna and I am feeding my whole house, which is currently three TV's. Several of these channels even broadcast in full HD so it looks real good on my HDTV.

If I had to built it again, I would just build a single bay and put a pre-amp on it. Give it a try. It wasn't that hard and it works very well.

Still using same Windstream but they have fiber to the house in the new neighborhood as opposed to copper in the old neighborhood.

Upload speeds are much better. Now, on to wiring the whole house for Ethernet (100M full duplex that is).

Online Christmas

I bought almost all of my kid's Christmas gifts online this year. No traffic, no lines, no fights, no hassles, great prices. I bought almost everything on amazon.com. It all arrived well before the 25th and shipping mostly free. I even bought my own gifts online but from woot and newegg. I started to buy my wife's gift online but was quickly 'corrected' by my in-laws as to the appropriate type of gift to get and where to get it. This was the first year where I bought most of the kid's gifts. The wish lists and saved carts are nice tools to use for comparison shopping and you never have to get dressed or leave your house. I look forward to doing it again next year. The Holidays aren't so bad after all.

I noticed several online retailers jumping on the one deal per day bandwagon. NewEgg now has the ShellShocker but I have not found a unique URL that links to it. I believe you have to be a member to get the ShellShocker deals. They are usually really good buys. I picked up a new HP personal laser printer for just $50. Not too bad. I tend to end up buying more from NewEgg than anywhere else. My personal favorite.

Have you ever needed to change the case of text in selected cells within an Excel spreadsheet? After searching the Internet, I found something close then modified it to meet my needs. Others may need to do the same so here is the macro that I ended up with.

I have found myself shopping online for electronics more and more so I have added some links to my side bar for some of my favorite shopping sites. NewEgg has been my fav for a while. You can find good buys if you watch their daily deals. Woot has one deal for sell each day so you have to check it every morning to see if it has something that you want.

To Blog or Not To Blog

If a blog falls in a forest with no one around, does anyone hear it? Does anyone care? Does either even matter?

I am busier now than I have ever been in my entire life. I have a new job. My wife is working outside the home now and still managing to be a full time wife and mother on top of her new job. Our kids are growing up and doing more and more each year. How do people keep up?

I may blog more as time goes on. For now, I must do taxes, file away paper work, shred old out of date documents, rollover 401k/403b accounts, read more self help books, smell more roses, etc.

Now it's time to sleep so I can have energy to meet the challenge.

What's in a Name

I haven't explained the blog name yet so here it goes.

If you've ever configured Cisco devices, you are aware that you can display the configuration using the show command. You can also save this text display and use it to directly configure another device of the same species. It is great with modern day cut and paste technology. This cannot be said of all network devices although more and more companies have been following Cisco's lead.

So what does this have to do with your blog name? Glad you asked. Not all commands that you execute show up in the displayed configuration. Some commands are just 'macros' so to speak that just execute other tasks. One such command is Crypto Key Generate. It generates a cryptology key that is used by the device but since it does not show up in the configuration, you often forget to put it back in during a cut and paste operation and thus the new device does not work correctly until you manually enter the command. Cisco commands, like other operating systems commands, can be abbreviated to uniqueness. Thus the command can be entered as cry key gen.

The abbreviated command was "catchy" like a jingle and just stuck in my head. And since I am a math nut, it seems like a good fit. That's it. If you expected more, I apologize. I like it and I am sticking with it.

My first blog that I deleted a while back was in direct response to another blogger, whom I will not mention, who had gone way overboard. Rumor has it that he allegedly used company property for purposes somehow related to his blogging agenda. Now he is looking for a new gig - as in "See ya', ba-bye" - don't want to get any of that on me (wash hands here).

Sometimes it is wise to heed your spouses advice even if you do not agree. Thanks girl.

I have since removed most of my personal information from my blog so as to distance myself from the whole situation.

Third Time is a Charm

This is my thrird start at creating a blog. My wife did not think very highly of the premise or names of the first two blogs. When trying to come up with a name, most of the simpler names I came up with were already taken. Even variants of everything I thought of were taken. So here is one that has an uncommon name that is not readily recognizable or common and it does not have any negative connotations - at least none that I am aware of. More later
